Introduction

Friday, 22nd May 2026 marks two deeply significant milestones in the history of the Francis DeGaulle Njie Foundation (FDNF): the
21st anniversary of the passing of Francis DeGaulle Njie, an twenty years since the establishment of the Foundation created in
his memory by his mother, Mrs Mary Alaba Mboge, and family on 22nd May 2006.

For two decades, the Francis DeGaulle Njie Foundation has stood as a remarkable example of what a focused, volunteer-driven and value-based charitable organisation can contribute to national development in The Gambia. Founded on the principles of excellence, discipline, hard work, service and compassion — values embodied by Francis DeGaulle Njie himself — the Foundation has evolved from a memorial initiative into a respected national institution engaged in education advocacy, youth empowerment, mentorship, health promotion, cancer awareness, and public policy dialogue.

This anniversary therefore provides an important opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of the Foundation over the past twenty years, but also to reflect critically on its future role in a rapidly changing Gambian and global society.

Remembering Francis DeGaulle Njie

Francis DeGaulle Njie was an exceptionally gifted Gambian whose academic brilliance and professional achievements inspired all who knew him. Having distinguished himself at St. Augustine’s and Gambia High Schools, he proceeded to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he studied Electrical Science and Engineering, and later obtained a Master’s Degree from the London School of Economics. His promising career in software engineering in the United States was tragically cut short by brain cancer at the age of only 34.

Yet, in many respects, his passing became the catalyst for a far larger legacy — one that has positively touched the lives of countless young Gambians and families over the past twenty years.

From its inception, the Foundation adopted the motto: “Helping Young Minds Achieve Excellence.” This was not merely a slogan, but a practical mission translated into concrete programmes and interventions across multiple sectors of national life.

Advancing Education and Youth Development Scholarship Programme

One of the Foundation’s earliest and most enduring interventions has been its scholarship programme for academically gifted but financially constrained students. Over the years, the Foundation provided scholarships to science students from St.Augustine’s Senior Secondary School, St.Joseph’s Senior Secondary School and Gambia Senior Secondary School. Beneficiaries received support for tuition, books, uniforms and educational materials, enabling many to continue their studies and pursue higher education opportunities both within and outside The Gambia. Several former scholarship recipients have since progressed into successful professional careers in law, medicine, education, business, information technology, engineering and public service.

Mentorship and Career Guidance

Recognising that academic support alone was insufficient, the Foundation established a Mentorship Programme aimed at providing students with guidance,counselling and exposure to professional role models. Volunteer mentors worked closely with students to help
them remain focused academically, choose career paths and build personal discipline and confidence.

This effort was complemented by a highly impactful series of Motivational Lectures delivered by accomplished Gambian professionals from various fields including software engineering, law, journalism, medicine, agriculture, entrepreneurship, ICT, construction, media and STEM disciplines.

These lectures served not only to inspire students, but also to expose them to professional possibilities that many had never previously considered.

Contribution to National Health Development

Cancer Awareness and Cervical Cancer Screening

The Foundation’s contribution to healthcare development in The Gambia has been substantial and
nationally recognised. Following the death of Francis DeGaulle Njie from brain cancer, the Foundation adopted cancer awareness and support as one of its core objectives. Particular attention was placed on cervical cancer, which remains one of the most common and preventable cancers
affecting Gambian women.
Working in collaboration with the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) and the Ministry of Health, the Foundation undertook several pioneering interventions, including:
• Sponsorship of training programmes for nurses
and midwives in cervical cancer screening
techniques;
• Support to the Cervical Cancer Screening Unit
at the EFSTH;
• Refurbishment and furnishing of the Unit;
• Facilitation of the shipment of a Colposcopy
(Finesse II System) from the United States;
• Sponsorship of public sensitisation
programmes through radio and community
engagement;
• Support to affected patients and families.

The Foundation also partnered with Government and international organisations to strengthen screening, referral and treatment systems aimed at improving early diagnosis and intervention.

The Francis DeGaulle Njie Gynaecology Centre

The most significant national recognition of the Foundation’s healthcare contribution came in December 2019 when theGovernment of The Gambia officially named the refurbished Gynaecology Department of the EFSTH the “Francis DeGaulle Njie Gynaecology Centre.” The Centre was inaugurated byHis Excellency President Adama Barrow in recognition of the Foundation’s longstanding support to cervical cancer prevention and women’s health
services.

This historic development represented a major milestone in the history of the Foundation. It signified not only the immortalisation of the name of Francis DeGaulle Njie within the country’s principal referral hospital, but also national acknowledgment of the impact that committed citizens and charitable organisations can make in strengthening public institutions.

National Advocacy and Public Engagement

Over the years, the Foundation demonstrated a unique willingness to engage directly with important national development issues through its Annual Fundraising Seminars and Dinners.These events became respected forums for constructive public dialogue involving policymakers, educators, professionals, students and members of the public.

Themes addressed over the years included:
• Discipline in the development of young minds;
• Drug abuse among Gambian youth;
• Prevention of common cancers through healthy
lifestyles;
• Agriculture and youth participation;
• ICT and entrepreneurship;
• Journalism and national development;
• STEM education and innovation.

Importantly, the Foundation consistently transformed these discussions into practical advocacy by submitting seminar reports and recommendations to relevant Government Ministries and
institutions.

In doing so, the Foundation contributed meaningfully to national conversations on education, youth development, health and social policy.

The Digital Shift and the 2025 Seminar

The Foundation’s Annual Fundraising Seminar and Dinner held on 12th December 2025 represented an important strategic turning point in its evolution.
Held under the theme “Digital Gambia: Innovation, Inclusion and Growth” and the sub-theme “Empowering the Next Generation in a Digital Era,” the seminar deliberately positioned the Foundation within emerging national and global conversations surrounding technology, Artificial Intelligence, digital transformation and the future of work.

The event brought together distinguished policymakers, academics, ICT professionals and entrepreneurs to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with technological advancement in The Gambia. This was a significant shift in orientation.

The Foundation recognised that the challenges confronting Gambian youth in 2026 differ considerably from those of 2006. The modern world increasingly demands digital literacy, innovation, cybersecurity awareness, entrepreneurial adaptability and the capacity to compete within a technology-driven global economy.

The seminar therefore reflected the Foundation’s determination to remain relevant in an era defined by rapid technological change.

The Isatou Mboge Award for Girls’ Empowerment
(IMAGE)

Another major milestone in the Foundation’s evolution was the establishment of the Isatou Mboge Award for Girls’ Empowerment
(IMAGE) in memory of the late Isatou Mboge, sister of Francis DeGaulle Njie.

IMAGE broadened the Foundation’s scope beyond science and health to include girls’ empowerment, media, journalism, communication and leadership development.

Through partnerships with the School of Journalism and Digital Media at the University of The Gambia, seminars and educational initiatives were organised to encourage professionalism, ethics, communication skills and women’s empowerment.

The establishment of IMAGE represented a recognition of the critical importance of empowering girls and young women through education and professional development.

Challenges and Institutional Resilience

The achievements of the Foundation become even more remarkable when viewed against the considerable challenges it faced over the years.

For much of its existence, the Foundation operated without a fully staffed administrative structure and depended heavily on volunteer service and personal sacrifice from Advisors, Trustees, Sub Committee members and supporters.

The Foundation also navigated periods of economic hardship, operational deficits, declining fundraising opportunities and the severe disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite these challenges, it continued to function, adapt and deliver meaningful programmes to beneficiaries and communities.

This institutional resilience remains one of the defining strengths of the Foundation.

Shaping the Future: The Next Decade

As the Foundation enters its third decade, it faces a vastly different national and global environment.
The Gambia of 2026 is increasingly shaped by:
• rapid technological advancement;
• Artificial Intelligence and automation;
• rising youth unemployment;
• economic uncertainty;
• educational quality concerns;
• digital transformation;
• widening social inequalities;
• and evolving healthcare challenges.

Within this changing environment, the role of the Francis DeGaulle Njie Foundation must necessarily evolve.
The future demands that the Foundation move beyond traditional scholarship and advocacy models into a broader framework of innovation, digital empowerment and strategic national relevance.
Over the next decade, the Foundation is well positioned to:
• expand STEM and AI-focused scholarship programmes;
• support digital literacy and coding initiatives for young people;
• establish innovation and mentorship hubs;
• strengthen girls’ empowerment and media literacy programmes through IMAGE;

• develop partnerships with universities, technology firms and international institutions; • advocate for ethical and inclusive use of Artificial Intelligence;
• and strengthen healthcare advocacy and cancer awareness initiatives.

The proposed establishment of a Francis DeGaulle Njie Centre for Excellence has the potential to become a transformative national institution dedicated to leadership development, innovation, mentorship and educational advancement.

At the same time, institutional strengthening will be essential. The Foundation will need to invest in:
• sustainable fundraising;
• administrative capacity;
• digital visibility;
• programme monitoring and evaluation;
• strategic partnerships;
• and youth participation in governance structures.

The challenge ahead is therefore not merely to preserve the Foundation’s legacy, but to modernise and expand its impact in response to emerging realities.

Appreciation and Tribute

As we commemorate twenty years of the Francis DeGaulle Njie Foundation, we express profound gratitude to all those whose commitment, sacrifice and goodwill sustained the Foundation throughout its journey.
Special tribute is paid to the Founder, Mrs Mary Alaba Mboge, whose vision, resilience and dedication transformed personal loss into national service.

We equally acknowledge the immense contributions of current and former Advisors, Board of Trustees members, Sub-Committee members, mentors, volunteers, partners, sponsors and supporters who devoted their time, expertise and resources to the success of the Foundation.

Special appreciation is extended to:

From scholarships and mentorship to cancer awareness, national advocacy, girls’ empowerment and digital transformation, the Foundation has contributed meaningfully to national development and human empowerment in The Gambia.

As it enters its next decade, may the Foundation continue to evolve, innovate and serve — helping young minds achieve excellence, empowering future generations, strengthening communities and contributing meaningfully to national development in an increasingly complex and technological world.
